Eritrea

The composition's dominant blue creates an expansive field of depth and movement. Red, yellow and pale green provide concentrated accents, while rounded masses meet angular crossings and narrow extensions. A strong vertical axis anchors the composition as curved forms connect its dispersed elements. This balance can be read as evoking Eritrea’s meeting of highland and coast, inherited memory and modern form.

Eritrea descends dramatically from elevated highlands through arid lowlands to the Red Sea coast and offshore islands. Its position has connected the Horn of Africa with Arabian and maritime worlds for centuries. After periods of Italian colonial rule and federation with Ethiopia, Eritrea achieved independence in 1993. Tigrinya, Tigre, Afar, Saho, Bilen, Beja, Kunama, Nara and Rashaida communities contribute to a richly plural cultural identity. Christian and Muslim traditions have long shaped architecture, ceremony and social life. Poetry, music, storytelling and craftsmanship sustain communal memory, while Asmara’s celebrated modernist architecture adds a distinctive twentieth- century dimension.
