Northern Cyprus

The composition's dense red-brown impasto gives its irregular silhouette an earthy intensity. White passages cut through the centre like illuminated pathways, while rounded forms, narrow extensions and detached elements create movement around the composition. The contrast between concentrated mass and surrounding white space suggests a landscape of connections and separations, while the interlocking forms evoke cultural memory continuing across generations.

Northern Cyprus occupies the northern part of Cyprus, an eastern Mediterranean island shaped over centuries by Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Lusignan, Venetian, Ottoman and British histories. Since the island’s division in 1974, the north has been administered by the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, recognised only by Türkiye; internationally, the United Nations recognises the Republic of Cyprus and has maintained efforts towards a negotiated settlement. Turkish Cypriot culture carries a rich Mediterranean inheritance expressed through language, music, cuisine, architecture, embroidery and communal traditions. Ottoman-era buildings, village crafts and urban cultural life coexist with older archaeological and architectural layers, giving the region a distinctive sense of accumulated history and place.

The red centre is crowded with projecting eyes or rounded heads, their limbs extending beyond a relatively tight core. Northern Cyprus carries Turkish Cypriot cultural history within a political status disputed since the island's division in 1974. The image can be approached as a body whose interior coherence and exterior relations are not the same. That is a reading of form and circumstance, not a declaration about sovereignty or a claim to identify a particular person in the cluster.
