Barbados

The artwork is dominated by brilliant golden yellow, structured by deep black and vivid blue. Broad rounded masses meet narrow vertical extensions, pointed forms and suspended oval elements. Dense impasto gives the surface warmth and physical energy, while white negative spaces open the composition. The balance of expansive colour and intricate internal geometry suggests vitality, continuity and an island identity both concentrated and outward-looking.

Barbados is the easternmost island of the Caribbean, shaped by Atlantic waters and a long history of movement and exchange. Indigenous peoples inhabited the island before European colonisation. From the seventeenth century, British rule and the plantation economy profoundly shaped its society through the experiences of enslaved Africans and their descendants. Emancipation came in 1834, independence in 1966, and Barbados became a republic in 2021. Barbadian culture, often described as Bajan, combines a strong African-Caribbean inheritance with traditions formed through centuries of island life. English is official, while Bajan speech remains central to everyday expression. Calypso, soca, tuk music, literature, storytelling, festivals and craftsmanship contribute to a confident cultural identity, celebrated especially through Crop Over.
