The artwork is anchored by intense blue, crossed by white, pale green, black and vivid accents of red and yellow. Sweeping curves meet elongated points and interlocking internal shapes, while dense impasto gives the surface remarkable physical presence. The layered geometry suggests Guatemala’s mountainous terrain and cultural plurality, with white openings creating rhythm and spaciousness within the energetic silhouette.

Guatemala lies between Mexico, Belize, Honduras, El Salvador, the Caribbean and the Pacific, encompassing volcanic highlands, tropical forests and fertile lowlands. The heartland of ancient Maya civilisation, it preserves extraordinary continuities between pre-Columbian history and contemporary life. Spanish colonial rule began in the sixteenth century, and independence followed in 1821. Guatemala’s cultural identity is exceptionally diverse, shaped by Maya peoples, Ladino communities, Xinka and Garifuna traditions. Spanish and numerous Mayan languages are spoken. Weaving, especially richly patterned textiles, ceramics, woodcarving, music, dance, storytelling and ceremonial traditions sustain a powerful creative inheritance.
