BARCELONA, SPAIN — El Arte Monumental presents Art of the World, an ambitious body of 249 works by contemporary artist Gheorghe Virtosu, developed as an exploration of cultural identity, collective memory, geography and the visual structures through which societies represent themselves.

Spanning Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, Oceania, South America, and territories and transnational identities, Art of the World approaches the world not simply as a collection of geographical entities, but as a complex field of histories, symbols, cultural memories and forms of belonging.

Rather than functioning as conventional representations of nations or places, the works examine how identity can be constructed, fragmented and remembered through visual language.

A Contemporary Art Project Across 249 Identities

At the centre of Art of the World is a fundamental question: how can contemporary art engage with the identity of a place without reducing that identity to a flag, monument or familiar national symbol?

Virtosu responds through abstraction.

Each of the 249 works develops an individual visual structure associated with a particular country, territory or identity. Colour, density, gesture and composition become instruments through which cultural difference and historical memory can be considered without relying on literal illustration.

The resulting collection establishes a visual dialogue between places that are normally separated by geography, politics and historical experience.

The collection therefore includes a dedicated section, Territories and Transnational Identities, alongside its six geographical regions.

Within this structure, Art of the World considers the world simultaneously as geography and as lived cultural memory.
